Barrington Moore Tabb (1934-2022)
Barrington Tabb (1934–2022) was a highly regarded self-taught British painter, celebrated for his unique approach to capturing the essence of everyday life in and around Bristol. Born in Almondsbury, South Gloucestershire, Tabb began painting in the mid-1950s, developing his distinctive style without formal training. His work often depicted the lively, gritty scenes of the docks, streets, pubs, and parks of Bristol, which became central themes in his art. Despite a brief period at art school, Tabb remained mostly self-taught, allowing his creative voice to flourish freely over the years.
Tabb's art gained significant recognition, with his works featured in numerous prestigious galleries. As an elected member of the Royal West of England Academy (RWA), Tabb exhibited regularly at the RWA in Bristol, where his contributions were highly regarded.
His impasto style paintings also appeared in exhibitions at well-known venues such as the Clifton Arts Club, the Annexe Gallery in Wimbledon, London, the Christopher Hull Gallery in London, and the Nevill Gallery in Bath. In 1976, Tabb’s art was showcased internationally in Davos, Switzerland, further solidifying his reputation as a talented and versatile artist.
Tabb’s art can be found in various public collections, including the RWA, and he continued to exhibit his work well into the 1990s, with a notable solo show at the Black Swan Guild in Frome in 1997.
