Clive Williams (1944-2015) Cornish Painter & Engraver
Clive Williams was a painter and engraver born in Plymouth who came from generations of Devon farming stock and the inspiration for his work was always closely connected with the land. Clive Williams began his training at Plymouth School of Art, 1960-1964 where his tutors included Alexander MacKenzie.
The following two years were spent in London gaining a teaching diploma after which a full-time teaching career then followed until he retired in 1996. He then relocated to Cornwall to devote his time to freelance tuition and full-time painting.
He became involved in a number of art societies including the Penzance Arts Club, the Penzance Society of Artists, where he rose to Chairman, the Plymouth Society of Artists, later becoming a member of the St. Ives Society of Artists.
The Cornish landscape, with its rugged coastlines, expansive moorlands, and unique light, profoundly influenced Williams' artistic vision. His works often encapsulate the essence of Penwith—a region in Cornwall—capturing its moody atmospheres and the interplay between land and sea. Pieces such as "Penwith Moor Landmarks" (2010) exemplify his ability to convey the spirit of the place through his art.
Throughout his career, Williams' art was featured in various exhibitions and garnered attention in the British art scene. His pieces have been included in auctions, reflecting their enduring appeal to collectors and art enthusiasts. For instance, his work "Reclining Nude," an ink drawing measuring 28x40 cm, was auctioned as part of the artist's estate, highlighting the continued interest in his artistic contributions.
Williams' legacy is preserved through the continued appreciation and collection of his works. His art serves as a testament to his deep connection to Cornwall and his ability to translate its landscapes into compelling visual narratives. The enduring interest in his pieces, as evidenced by their presence in auctions and collections, underscores the lasting impact of his artistic vision.
His work is held in the collections of Falmouth Art Gallery, Plymouth City Art Gallery, Penlee House Museum as well as numerous private collections throughout the UK, France, Germany, Holland, Spain and the USA.
In 2014 a monograph entitled ‘Some Paintings and Sketches’ was published with an appreciation by Lar Cann.
Clive Williams passed away in 2015 after a long illness, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to inspire and resonate within the Cornish art community and beyond. His dedication to capturing the essence of Cornwall ensures that his work remains a significant part of British art history.
