Frederick Mayor (1866 -1916)
A Staithes Group original member with a light impressionistic style
Frederick Mayor was born in Winksley near Ripon, Yorkshire. He attended the Royal College of Art studying under Frank Brangwyn and at the Académie Julian in Paris. With his wife Hannah he lived in France between 1902-10.
He showed at Baillie Gallery, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Goupil Gallery, International Society of Sculptors, Painters & Gravers, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Leicester Galleries, London Salon, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists and Royal Scottish Academy, Yorkshire Union of Artists, New English Art Club and at the Leicester Galleries over a comparatively short artistic career.
Fred and his wife were active in the Staithes Group and in the Staithes Art Club, with Fred being a founder member of both. His son Freddy went on to found the Mayor Gallery in London.
Examples of his work are in the collections of Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Government Art Collection, Imperial War Museum, Leeds Museums and Galleries, Manchester City Galleries, Middlesbrough Council, Museums Sheffield, Pannett Art Gallery, Tate Gallery and the Victoria & Albert Museum.
