George Holloway (1883-1977)

Local Gloucestershire Artist

George Holloway was elected a member of Bristol Savages in 1923, a group now known as the ‘Bristol 1904 Arts’. Little is known about him before this point except that he served in the World War I as a Staff Captain in the Royal Artillery, and that he was in business with the local printing firm of Holloway and Sons.

He also made over a thousand broadcasts for the BBC, was a past member of the Bristol Playgoers` Society and a life member of the British Empire Shakespeare Society. In his business life Holloway was a past Chairman at the Bristol Master Printers` Association.

In 1961 George was elected an Artist member of the Bristol Savages. He was a talented painter, mainly in watercolour and was known for his fine figurative work and was also particularly skilled at depicting horses. Scenes of Bristol and the surrounding area appear in his works, with local pubs and grand houses or buildings being painted, again usually in watercolours. In contrast to this he also produced some fine black and white illustrations that were published in the Bristol Illustrated News. His work is in the collection of the University of Wales, Aberystwyth.
