Ronald Ossory Dunlop RA (1894 - 1973)

A wonderful impasto “alla prima”painter, often choosing landscapes and waterways

Founder of the Emotionist Group (1923), Dunlop was born in Dublin in 1894. The Irish oil painter’s work is held in many public galleries including the Tate and his work was exhibited widely at shows held at the Royal Academy, Royal Hibernian Academy and Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts.

Eleanor, his mother, was a skilled watercolour artist and his early skills were developed further at Manchester School of Arts and then Wimbledon Art School under Alfred James Collister (1869 – 1964) the landscape artist. If you look at Collisters work in the Manx Museum, Douglas, Isle of White, UK, you will see his obvious influence on Dunlop.

Choosing England as his adult home he settled in West Sussex near Chichester, holding his first solo show in 1928 at the Redfern Gallery, Cork Street, London. Unlike so many artists, Dunlop was popular and became famous within his lifetime and was elected a full member of the Royal Academy in 1950.

In addition to his painting, he authored many books, perhaps a reflection of his Scottish father’s (Daniel Nicol Dunlop) strong literary ties with W.B Yeats & George Russell.

Dunlop wrote his autobiography “Struggling with Paint” in 1956. He often painted portraits or scenic water & boating scenes where you can expect thick Impasto “alla prima” painting with most of his artwork being signed with just his surname - Dunlop.
