This bright example of Fred Yates watercolours was painted during his time in France and includes classic ‘Fred’ people. This colourful watercolour is painted on heavy weight Canson Montvalle Aquarelle Paper which is made from 60% cotton fibres.
Fred Yates (1922–2008), a British artist, moved to France in the 1990s, residing in Provence and Haute-Vienne. His French period saw him embrace vibrant plein-air landscapes, capturing rural life with bold colours and expressive brushwork. His works often depicted local scenes, including chapels and countryside vistas, reflecting his connection to the French environment. Despite his reclusive nature, Yates encouraged local artists and embraced the artistic community.
