A late William Gear painting from 1995. Similar to Caged Yellow from 1996 held at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists Gallery, Birmingham which is an acrylic & ink on paper. This painting has an extremely fresh and modern feel, structural and abstract in its form.
William Gear (1915–1997), a Scottish-born British artist, was a pioneer of post-war abstract art. Educated at Edinburgh College of Art, he studied under Fernand Léger in Paris, shaping his modernist vision. Gear's military service during WWII exposed him to European art, influencing his bold, geometric compositions. A member of the avant-garde CoBrA group, he exhibited internationally, including alongside Jackson Pollock. Gear's works, characterized by vibrant colors and dynamic forms, reflect his engagement with abstraction and European modernism. As a teacher and curator, he significantly impacted British art, leaving a legacy celebrated in major collections and retrospectives.
