Charles Walter Harvey (1895-1970) | Landscape Artist
Charles W Harvey was born in 1895 in London but was raised in Belfast so is most associated as an artist of Irish landscapes. His father was an Ordnance Survey map-maker and moved the family from London to Belfast’s Antrim Road in 1906.
Harvey attended Belfast School of Art where he won a gold medal in the National Competition for design, followed by a brief spell at the Metropolitan School of Art in Dublin. Early in his career he was a Damask designer and was interested in antique furniture. From 1932-1960, Harvey taught at St Mary’s Training College in Belfast becoming Head of the Art Department until his retirement.
Harvey had close ties with Ulster painter & artists including Hans Iten, Padraic Woods, Nevill Johnson and John Luke. Harvey & Luke visited Paris together in 1937.
He exhibited at the Ulster Arts Club, and in 1976 the Arts Council Galley held a retrospective exhibition of his art. His artworks come to the market infrequently. He is best known for his landscape painting, generally of Ireland: Connemara, Donegal and County Down.
