Eugène Cauchois Art for Sale
Eugène Henri Cauchois (1850 – 1911)
Eugène Henri Cauchois was born in Rouen, France in 1850. His early training was at the Rouen School of Art in Normandy and he studied under Gustave Morin (1809– 1886).
Moving to Paris he continued to study under Ferdinand Duboc (1813-1869) and Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889) at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and in 1874 debuted at the Salon with a painting called - Un Lapin (A Rabbit). Cauchois settled in Brussels sometime between 1878 and 1879 and remained there until the mid 1880’s, we could find little information of his work from this period.
Cauchois is best known for his still life work, in particular flowers, and his still life work reflects the influences from the impressionists of that time. His use of strong colours with layered loose strokes give a soft, even romantic, feel to many works. However, he did paint other subjects including pastoral farming landscapes, shellfish and coastal scenes and well as being known for his decorative panel works. He continued to exhibit regularly at the Paris Salon until 1908 and died in 1911.
